GWM Cannon (Ute) — Problems & Patterns, Honestly Stated
Scope first: this page covers the GWM Ute / Cannon 2.0 diesel we document — not the larger Cannon Alpha, which has its own two recalls (they’re on our tracker). The Cannon’s documented story: one fire-risk recall, one classic diesel-ownership pattern, and one gearbox complaint stream we grade honestly rather than amplify.
1. The fuel-filter recall (2023 diesels) — REC-006123
2,872 utes from the 2023 build: the wrong lubricant on the fuel-filter O-ring degrades the seal over time — diesel can leak, and leaked diesel plus an ignition source is a fire risk. The fix is a free O-ring replacement. First question on any used 2023 Cannon: recall done, and no diesel smell around the filter housing since.
2. DPF clogging — the pattern with a habit for a fix
The most consistently documented Cannon pattern is the diesel particulate filter clogging under short urban trips that never let regeneration finish: rising fuel use, sluggishness, warning lights, and in advanced cases a forced dealer regeneration. It’s a diesel-wide phenomenon, but it’s repeatedly and specifically reported on this ute — likely because it’s bought as a value work truck and then lives on school runs. The fix costs nothing: a proper highway run every couple of weeks, letting an active regen complete rather than switching off mid-cycle. If you never leave the suburbs, this is the wrong drivetrain — and we’d rather say that than sell you a maintenance schedule for it.
3. The 8AT reports — graded honestly
Owner reports of hesitation, delayed engagement, and clunky low-speed shifts from the ZF-sourced 8-speed recur across review aggregators. What’s missing is workshop-level triangulation: no service bulletin we can cite, no repair-marketplace cluster. So we grade it a recurring complaint, not a confirmed defect pattern — test-drive in stop-start traffic where the complaints live, and judge with your own right foot. Many of the same reports note the behaviour improves with software currency; ask the dealer for the latest TCU calibration state.
Buying used — 5-minute checklist
- 2023 build: fuel-filter recall REC-006123 done? Any diesel odour at the filter?
- What was its life — highway ute or suburban shopper? Short-trip history is DPF history.
- Stop-start test drive: low-speed shift quality, engagement from cold.
- Check the 6-month/5,000 km first-service regime was honoured — the Cannon’s schedule is stricter early than rivals’.
- 4WD: confirm all three driveline oils in the history — three separate items, often skipped at independents.

Cannon Alpha is out of scope here by design.
