P0128 — Coolant Temperature Below Thermostat Regulating Temperature (MG Context)
Standard meaning: the engine took too long to warm up — the ECU expected the thermostat to hold a regulating temperature and it didn’t. It is usually the cheapest cooling-system part on the car (a thermostat stuck open), and because the car “drives fine”, owners ignore it — while it quietly costs winter heater performance, real fuel economy (a cold engine runs rich), and accelerated engine wear. On one MG in particular it deserves more respect than that.
Why it matters on the older MG3
The older MG3 (2013–2024) has a documented pattern of cooling-system faults on early cars (evidence here). On that car, treat any cooling-related code as a prompt to look at the whole system: coolant level and colour, hose condition, and history of top-ups. The handbook coolant is Glycol OAT, 4.9 litres (full fluid specs) — mixed or mystery coolant in the expansion tank is itself a warning sign on a used car.
The usual suspects
- Thermostat stuck open — the classic cause, more likely with age and mileage.
- Coolant temperature sensor drifting — reads low, so the ECU thinks warm-up failed.
- Low coolant — which is never the fault itself; it’s the symptom of a leak that needs finding (on early MG3s, see above).
- Short-trip driving in cold weather — can trigger the code on a healthy but marginal system; the freeze-frame will show it.
Safe owner checks
- Coolant level in the expansion tank — cold engine only, never open a hot system.
- Does the temperature gauge (or heater) take visibly longer to come up than it used to? That’s the code in human form.
- Any coolant smell, crusty residue at hose joints, or unexplained top-ups in the service history?
- Hybrids and EVs: multiple cooling circuits exist and some are not owner-serviceable at all — on a HS Hybrid or any EV, level checks beyond the marked owner reservoir are workshop territory.
When it’s a workshop job
Thermostat replacement on these engines is buried enough that it’s a lift job for most people, and the system needs proper bleeding afterwards — trapped air causes exactly the overheating you were preventing. Pressure-testing for leaks and sensor-reading verification belong on the same visit. It’s cheap work: the expensive version of this story is the one where P0128 was ignored for two winters.
