BYD South Africa — Warranty & Service, Decoded

BYD’s official South African warranty page draws a line through its own showroom: the Dolphin and Dolphin Surf carry 3 years/100,000 km of vehicle cover while every other model carries 5 years — a two-year gap between cars parked metres apart, priced closer than the cover suggests. Here’s the full structure, quoted from the official page.

The official warranty structure

LayerCoverageApplies to
Vehicle warranty — tier 15 years / 100,000 kmAtto 3 · Seal · Sealion 5 DM-i · Sealion 6 DM-i · Sealion 7 · Shark 6 DMO · Atto 8
Vehicle warranty — tier 23 years / 100,000 kmDolphin · Dolphin Surf — the fine print nobody reads aloud
Power battery8 years / 200,000 kmAll — the market’s longest battery kilometrage among Chinese brands
Drive unit (motor & transmission)5 years / 100,000 kmAll
The two-tier trap, in rand terms. A Dolphin buyer gets two fewer years of vehicle cover than an Atto 3 buyer under the same roof. On the used market this compounds: a 2023 Dolphin is already out of vehicle warranty; a 2023 Atto 3 is not. Nothing on the window sticker says so — the warranty page does, and now this one does too. The clock runs from the purchase-invoice date, not first registration.

What the official page does not say

Market comparison — for cross-shoppers

Against the ZA Chinese-brand field: BYD’s battery kilometrage leads (200,000 km vs GWM’s 150,000 and MG’s 200,000-with-a-70%-floor), while its vehicle cover trails (5/100k vs GWM’s 7/200k and Chery’s 5/150k+million-km engine). And the Dolphin tier trails everything. Warranty shopping across these brands is genuinely worth an hour — the spreads are the widest we’ve documented in any market.
