MG4 Running Costs — Australia

✓ Technically reviewed by Daniel Wei Chen — Senior Chinese Automotive Diagnostics & Repair Specialist, Sydney, Australia · 19 August 2026.

The MG4 is the cheapest MG to service — $1,366–$1,434 over five years, helped by the EV-only 25,000 km interval — and official energy figures put charging at roughly $655–$927 a year on the government’s assumptions. One warning before you compare range numbers: the older MG4 entries and the new Urban use different test cycles, so their range figures are not comparable — details below.

Scheduled servicing — 5-year capped totals (25,000 km / 12 mo interval)

VariantServices 1–5 (to 125,000 km / 60 mo)TotalAverage / year
Urban (43 & 54)$149 + $286 + $310 + $472 + $149$1,366$273
Essence 64$159 + $296 + $284 + $482 + $159$1,380$276
XPower$159 + $296 + $338 + $482 + $159$1,434$287

Prices AUD inc. GST from MG Australia’s official Service Pricing Guide (retrieved 19 August 2026). Note the interval: an MG4 doing 15,000 km/year sees the dealer for the km-based limit less often than any petrol MG — but the 12-month clock still applies.

Charging — official energy consumption

VariantEnergy usekWh per 15,000 km/yrGVG annual cost*
64 kWh RWD (2023–25)130 Wh/km≈ 1,950 kWh$655
77 kWh RWD (2023–25)140 Wh/km≈ 2,100 kWh$706
XPower AWD (2023–25)152 Wh/km≈ 2,280 kWh$766
Urban Essence 54 (2026)161 Wh/km†≈ 2,415 kWh$811
51 kWh RWD (2023–25)184 Wh/km≈ 2,760 kWh$927

*Australian Government Green Vehicle Guide (greenvehicleguide.gov.au, retrieved 19 August 2026). GVG’s annual cost assumes 14,000 km/year at last-quarter average retail fuel prices; litres-per-year is our arithmetic on the official figure at 15,000 km/year — both assumptions stated so you can rescale to your own mileage. Home off-peak rates can cut these figures substantially; public rapid charging multiplies them.

†The test-cycle trap. Government entries for the 2026 MG4 Urban are measured on WLTP (4-Phase); the older MG4 entries use an earlier, more optimistic cycle — which is why the old 64 kWh car shows an official range of 535 km while the new Urban 54 shows 405 km. Do not conclude the new car has worse range hardware — the measuring stick changed. Compare within one cycle only, and treat all lab ranges as comparison tools.

Warranty — Australia

10 years / 250,000 km new-car warranty on current models, including the traction battery on MG’s current terms. MG4s sold earlier (2022–2024) carry the warranty in force at purchase — typically 7 years in that era — so check your own documents. Battery state-of-health is the running-cost question that matters most on a used MG4: ask for a dealer SoH report before buying.
